An article (100) and method to provide protection in various environments. The article (100) may include a solid substrate (102) having a first coefficient of thermal expansion, a magnesium oxide-based layer (106) having a second coefficient of thermal expansion, and a bond layer (104) disposed between the solid substrate (102) and the magnesium oxide-based layer (106). The bond layer (104) may include a third coefficient of thermal expansion substantially intermediate the first and second coefficients of thermal expansion to facilitate thermal compatibility between the solid substrate (102) and the magnesium oxide-based layer (106). Further, the magnesium oxide-based layer (106) may be substantially non-porous, thereby providing a hermetic seal limiting gases, particulates, steam and fluid access to the solid substrate (102).
