<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface mounter in which a transmission member can be easily inspected without preventing the transmission member for a head unit from rubbing against a supporting member. <P>SOLUTION: The surface mounter is provided with the head unit having a suction head, and the supporting member formed to extend in an X-direction and freely movably supporting the head unit in the X-direction. The mounter is provided with a Y-direction driving device for moving the supporting member in a Y-direction along a pair of Y-direction guide rails, and a second retaining member provided on a side portion opposite to the head unit in the supporting member. The mounter is provided with a transmission member 11 consisting of a cable having an extending portion extending from the head unit to the second retaining member side, and a U-shaped bending portion 41 laterally extending like a U shape on the second retaining member and connecting the head unit to a control device 17; and a negative pressure pipe.
