A process for the preparation of 3,4,5-trimethyl phenol comprises heating 2-chloroisophorone or 4-chloroisophorone in the presence of an aqueous solution of a mineral acid of normality of from 1 to 15. 2,3,5-trimethylphenol is also obtained in minor amounts. Examples are furnished. 2-Chloroisophorone is prepared by reacting isophorone and chlorine. 4-Chloroisophorone is prepared by reacting 3,5,5 - trimethyl - 3 - cyclohexen - 1 - one with chlorine in the presence of sodium bicarbonate and carbon tetrachloride.</p> |
