<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact laser module, which prevents an increase of noise and reads optical codes of a short distance. <P>SOLUTION: The compact laser module 1 for reading the optical codes includes: a scanning illumination section having at least one light source 8 for generating a laser beam, and means 9, 10 for scanning the optical codes C to be read by using a laser spot; and photodetecting sections 20 to 24 for collecting at least a portion of the light diffused by the codes C and for detecting the collected light.
