A gate valve, suitable for use at cryogenic temperatures, comprises a main body portion 10 and a cap portion 12, the former including a fluid flow passage 15 intercepted by a gate chamber 13, and a jacket 80 defining a vacuum chamber 81, and the latter portion including a ring 35 removably secured to the body portion and having fixed thereto a sleeve member 25, which member has disposed therein the gate spindle 26. The spindle is retained in position by two journals 41, 42, of which two the latter is resilient, and is displaceable axially but non- rotatably by rotation of a hand-wheel 47. The valve gate 14, which is secured to the spindle by means of a semi-spherical end 29 provided on the spindle and engaging a socket 30 provided on the gate, comprises two planar and mutually inclined surfaces 18 and 19 which are formed with annular recesses (67, Fig. 2, not shown), the recesses housing annular resilient sealing rings having an L-shaped or T-shaped cross-section, the stem portion of each of which projects for engagement with the annular seat 17 and the flange portion of each of which, extending from, and at right angles to the stem portion, is engaged by a plate or ring disposed within the recess and removably secured to the wedge (Figs. 2, 5 and 6, not shown), a bleed passage 14A, 14B being formed within the wedge for draining chamber 13 to the passage 15.</p> |
