PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high luminance projection type image display device by improving a conventional color separation unit. SOLUTION: In the projection type image display device, a reflection surface 222 is disposed on an area besides an opening part 221 inside an incident opening plate 22 of a rod integrator 24. Further, first and second polarization separation prisms S211, S222 having such a polarizing characteristic as to reflect light, for example, in a first polarizing direction and transmit light in a second polarizing direction are arranged in the vertical direction on the emission side of the rod integrator 24, and retarders 23b, 213 which retard polarization of light in the first polarizing direction by 1/2 wavelength are disposed on a specified side surface of the second polarization separation prism.
