The invention relates to odor-blocking water-absorbent compositions containing at least one water-absorbent polymer and at least one urease inhibitor. The polymer represents a polymer carrying acid groups, 50 to 65 mole percent of which are neutralized, while the urease inhibitor concentration ranges from 0.0001 to 0.1 percent by weight relative to the composition. Also disclosed are methods for producing said composition, hygiene articles, and the production thereof.
