Detecting faults in vehicle fuel pump with filter, compares electrical power input with hydraulic pumping performance and identifies departures outside given thresholds

Hydraulic performance (Phyd) in the fuel system and electric power (Pel) consumed by the electric fuel pump (34) are compared with each other. On departure from given values and/or on exceeding or falling below given threshold values, an error state is deduced. Unacceptable operation of the filter (32) and/or pump is identified, should the efficiency eta derived from the values (Phyd, Pel) fall below a given threshold.
