In a vertical continuous casting apparatus in which the mould 2 is cooled by water flowing down its outside surface, the mould is mounted upon a casting frame 1 via an intermediate unit 3, 4, and coolant is jetted from a horizontal row of holes 13, the diameter of the holes being the same as the width of the groove 12 at the bottom of which they are situated. Coolant leaves the holes 13 and forms a continuous sheet of liquid in the groove 12, then passes over a sheet deflecting member 4 (which is bolted to the upper part 3 of the mould support). The sheet deflecting member 4 has a grooved part 41, that prevents the liquid sheet from moving transversely to the flow direction, a flat part 43 on which the liquid sheet spreads out, and a pointed edge 42 which prevents liquid from accumulating on the deflector 4. The liquid sheet then impinges against the mould wall 22. Smaller moulds may be accommodated in the casting frame 1, by the use of several intermediate mould-supporting members.</p> |
