Novel compounds of Formula I and acid addition salts thereof, wherein R 1 is C 1-9 phenylalkyl and R 2 is allyl or propynyl, are prepared either by dehydration of the corresponding amide or by reaction of a R 2 halide with a metal salt of formula where Y# is an alkali metal atom and, if R 2 is allyl, by partial reduction of the compound wherein R 2 is propynyl. Nitriles of the Formula I above, where R 2 is H, are prepared by dehydration of the corresponding amides which themselves are prepared by aralkylation of the N-unsubstituted piperidine. Pharmaceutical compositions having antitussive action and in conventional forms for oral, rectal or parenteral administration comprise an above novel compound and one or more carriers or diluents.</p> |
