PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device capable of reducing luminance irregularity directly above a lamp without degrading luminance due to the pattern of a light guide plate. SOLUTION: This backlight device 1A is provided with flat fluorescent lamps 3 each comprising a glass tube where a cross-sectional shape of an internal discharge space is formed into an elliptical or flat shape specified by using at least an major axis (a) and a minor axis (b), and having a discharge medium filled in the discharge space in the glass tube; and a transparent light guide member 2. The light guide member 2 has a flat light emitting surface 5, and a reflecting surface 4 reflecting light from the flat fluorescent lamp 3 to uniformly guide it to the light emitting surface 5, and having recessed parts 6 for housing the flat fluorescent lamps 3 therein. Each flat fluorescent lamp 3 is housed in the recessed part 6 of the reflecting surface 4 of the light guide member 2 in an attitude where an angle formed by the major axis (a) direction of the discharge space and a normal line of the light emitting surface 5 of the light guide member 2 is set below 45°.
