METHOD OF TREATING PHENOL-CONTAINING WATER AND TREATING APPARATUS

A method of treating phenol-containing water with an azeotropic distillation column in which the phenol-containing water is subjected to azeotropic distillation in the presence of an entrainer for water and which is equipped with a column-top stationary separation tank disposed around a top part of the azeotropic distillation column and with an automatic gas chromatograph disposed in a drainage line from the separation tank. The method comprises: continuously determining the concentration of phenol in the discharged water with the automatic gas chromatograph and monitoring it to thereby detect a change in phenol concentration in the discharged water early; and controlling the operation of the azeotropic distillation column. This method stably reduces the phenol concentration in the discharged water to a low value without the need of disposing, e.g., a liquid-liquid extraction apparatus (extractive distillation column) on the downstream side.
