1,185,800. Rack and pinion gearing. CAM GEARS Ltd. 12 Dec., 1968, No. 59141/68. Heading F2Q. In a rack and pinion gear for vehicle steering mechanisms, the rack 3 is formed on a sleeve 10 which is carried on a rack bar 9 and is capable of restricted longitudinal sliding movement relative to the rack bar against the progressive resistance of resilient means 12, 13. The rack 3 is held in mesh with a pinion 1 by a spring- urged yoke 5 acting on the back of the sleeve 10. The sleeve 10 is eccentrically bored at 10a to receive a rod 9a extending eccentrically from a portion 9c of the rack bar, the sleeve being coaxial with the portions 9b, 9c. The rod 9a is screwed into the end portion 9b. Polyurethane or other resilient washers 12, 13, or helical or Belleville metal springs separate the sleeve 10 from the end portions 9b, 9c, packing shims 14 being used as necessary. Sleeve bore 10a and rod 9a may be alternatively coaxial with portions 9b, 9c. |
