The axle (62) of the railway vehicle is fitted with a metal disc (9) of a magnetic material, with the disc edges toothed. A permanent magnet (7) is positioned to straddle the disc edge, like a caliper type of sensor, with sensor windings to monitor the rate at which the magnetic teeth pass through the magnet gap. - The magnet is mounted on the axle support (64). Any lateral vibrations from the wheels are compensated for in the sensor as the total air gap remains constant. The system provides accurate wheel speed information for the anti-blocking brake control without being affected by the lateral vibrations.
