The paper production or printing process is modified so that certain banknote characteristics will later become permanently visible as a result of a reaction which can be caused by spraying or contact by other means with a non-hazardous, neutral (liquid) substance or gas in the event of e.g. an attempted theft of the money. These characteristics can be a discoloration or (local) disintegration, making the banknote invalid tender and therefore valueless. This can be achieved using a special printing ink. The sprayable material can include a DNA marker for tracing purposes.
