[Also in Division G1] A steering system for a ship comprises means for producing a primary steering signal #c, which may be a manually operated helm 1, or an auto pilot, 7-10, a gyro 2 measuring the rate of turn #, a function generator 3 which produces a signal H(#), which is characteristic of the handling properties of the ship, an amplifier, 4, to multiply # by a constant -a and a summing device 6 which produces a desired output signal #{ = #c + H(#)- a#} to a rudder angle control means. The function generator may include such relevant factors as, for example, speed, loading, water depth and effects due to nearby ships.</p> |
