A method of mixing binder ingredients to form a binder and of applying it, for example, to glass fibres to form a glass fibre mat comprises causing one or more but not all of the ingredients to flow as a stream through compartments 101-106 in a mixing column 100 and adding the other ingredients to the stream in sequence at appropriate locations, passing the stream to a supply of pre-mixed binder in a surge reservoir (not shown) and supplying the binder from the reservoir to stations where it is applied to glass fibres. The binder ingredients may be agitated in each compartment by means of a stirrer comprising a rotatable shaft 140a provided with blades 141- 146. The flow of ingredients between compartments may be controlled by the provision of baffles 131-135 on the shaft. The supply of ingredients to the mixing column may be regulated according to the level of binder in the surge reservoir and the relative proportions of ingredients supplied may be controlled with the aid of a computer.</p> |
