A digital broadcasting system and a processing method therefor are provided to improve the receiving performance of a receiver by layering enhanced data and multiplexing the layered enhanced data and main data. An E-VSB(Enhanced-Vestigial Side Band) packet formatter(602) groups a plurality of continued enhanced data packets, classifies the enhanced data group into plural or more regions, and assigns at least one of enhanced data and known data to the corresponding regions according to characteristics of the respective regions. A packet multiplexer(603) multiplexes and outputs the enhanced data and a main data packet by a transport packet unit. If the data outputted from the packet multiplexer(603) are the enhanced data group, an RS(Reed Solomon) encoder/non-systematic RF(Radio Frequency) parity place holder insertion unit(606) determines and outputs a non-systematic RF parity place according to the characteristics of the regions classified in the enhanced data group to perform data interleaving.
