Heaters (9, 10) are associated with the jaws of the splicing equipment (1). The strip sections (7, 8) are spliced between upper and lower jaws of the tool, heaters being included in either or both of them. Their heating is direct or indirect, using an electrical resistance heater, a radiant heater or a hot air blower. Electrical resistance heaters are located on, in or adjacently to the upper and lower jaws of the splicing tool The heaters comprise heating strips, cartridges or flat heaters. The jaws are heated by an indirect heater whilst in a resting position. They move relative to the belt, from this position to a splicing position. A number of heaters are arranged in parallel and/or in series, over the width of the splicing tool jaws. The power supplied to each heater is individually-controllable. Sensors relay measured values of jaw temperatures to the heater controller, which uses them in controlling the splicing operation. |
