Trioxane is polymerized under anhydrous conditions in the presence of an electrophilic catalyst with at least one vinyl ether and with at least one other comonomer. Specified vinyl ethers are methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, 2-ethyl hexyl and phenyl, vinyl ethers while the third comonomer may be a cyclic ether, an N-vinyl or C-vinyl substituted derivative of a heterocyclo compound, an aliphatic or alicyclic unsaturated hydrocarbon, an allyl ether or ester, a compound containing one or more isocyanate groups and one containing one or more nitrile groups. Terpolymers in which the third monomer is a cyclic carboxylic ester (Specification 998,479), an aldehyde (Specification 1,002,761) or styrene or substituted styrenes (Specification 1,009,882) are disclaimed. Specified catalysts are metal and metalloidal halides, their complexes with water and with organic compounds in which the donor atom is oxygen or sulphur, non-oxidizing inorganic anols and their complexes with boron trifluoride, complexes of boton trifluoride with weakly basic nitrogen compounds, halogens and interhalogen compounds and oxonium salts. The reaction preferably takes place in a continuous manner at between -100 DEG and 100 DEG C. |
