A liquid is applied to a surface by discharging it downwardly from a dispenser as a steadily flowing film, while the dispenser and surface are relatively displaced, the volume rate of descent of the liquid being such as to maintain at the bottom of the descent path a quantity of liquid which flows over the surface in the direction in which coating proceeds. Initially a bead may be struck between the dispenser and surface and the relative distance then increased to too great an amount to maintain a bead by surface tension. The liquid may first be applied to an auxiliary surface flush with the surface to be coated. The flow of liquid may initially be assisted by gas under pressure. The surface may be of glass, metal, plastics or ceramic in sheet form. A further coating may be applied by the same method and the compositions of the successive coatings may react to form a desired deposit. In the apparatus shown a curved rail 3 supports a trough 4 above a glass sheet 5 on a support 1. The liquid flows from a reservoir 6 through a pipe 7 and a valve 9 into the trough to maintain a constant level therein. At commencement of operations a slit 10 at the bottom of the trough is against the strip 2. It is then raised from the surface by movement along the rail and liquid begins to flow. Once the desired height of the dispense is reached it is moved at a fixed distance from the glass sheet. |
