The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein A is the group or a group wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C1- 8 alkyl or aralkyl group, and their preparation by reaction of cytosamine with a p-nitrophenyl ester of a compound of formula A-COOH. The compounds of the invention have anti-viral and anti-bacterial activity and may be added to drinking water for poultry.ALSO:Compositions having antibacterial and antiviral activity comprise, in combination with a carrier, a compound of formula wherein A is the group or a group wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-8 alkyl or aralkyl group. The compositions may be used for cleaning instruments or in horticultural sprays.
