In a solid-electrolyte probe'for the determination of oxygen in molten metals, the solid electrolyte body is made of a sufficiently small volume to withstand thermal shock when rapidly immersed in molten steel without pre-heating. Dimensions are given. As shown the solid electrolyte 1 is bonded by a cement 2 (e.g. zirconia, alumina or silica in water-glass) in the tip of a quartz tube 3 which is held by a graphite plug 6 in a graphite sleeve 7. The lead wire runs down the air-blast tube 5. The other electrode comprises an e.g. molybdenum wire 8. The solid electrolyte may have any shape as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown).
