The adjustable strut for car suspensions has a helical spring (4) mounted on the outside of a hydraulic shock absorber (7). A hydraulic adjusting system (8) allows the distance between the mounting (6) at the top of the spring and the chassis mounting (2) to be varied. An auxiliary spring (16) is mounted between the upper spring mounting and the adjuster.
