A flat panel display device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to enhance an adhesion property between upper and lower substrates by planarizing a lower contact surface of a frit. A flat panel display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and a frit(307b). The first substrate is divided into a pixel region and a non-pixel region. The pixel region includes pixels. The second substrate is arranged to face the pixel region on the first substrate. The frit is formed between the first and second substrates and encloses the first and second substrates. The non-pixel region of the first substrate includes a transparent substrate(300b) having a buffer layer(301b), a first insulation film(302b), a first metal film(303b), a second metal film(305b), and a protective film(306b). The second metal film is formed on the first metal film and the first insulation film. A predetermined portion of a second insulation film(304b) is etched, so that the protective film is formed on the second insulation film.
