A washing machine with a steam generator and a method for controlling the same are provided to restrain accumulation of scales in the interior of a steam generator due to long time use thereof by cooling a steam generator. A washing machine includes a steam generator(30). The steam generator includes a water supply valve and a heater(33). The water supply valve supplies water into the interior of the steam generator. The heater heats the water supplied through the water supply valve. A control section controls the operation of the water supply valve and the heater to cool the steam generator if the operation time of the steam generator exceeds a set time. The control section includes a counter for counting the operation time of the steam generator.
