False signals and noise are reduced in a device such as a digital still camera having a solid-state electronic image sensing device. To achieve this, a luminance signal generating circuit generates luminance signals Y 1 and Y 3 having different reproduction frequency bands. The larger the sum Cd of the absolute values of color difference signals Cr and Cb, the greater the proportion of R- and B-color components in the image of a subject. Accordingly, the luminance signals Y 1 and Y 3 are combined in such a manner that a reproduction frequency band based upon the R- and B-color components will dominate.
