TIMING BELT TENSIONER WITH ONE WAY ANTI-KICK BACK CLUTCH

A timing belt tensioner (10) for a motor vehicle engine (13) comprising a pivot (12) that is fixed relative to the motor vehicle egine (13). A tension er arm (16) is mounted for pivotal movement on the pivot (12). The tensioner ar m (16) has a friction surface (22) disposed in friction sliding relation with an adjacent surface (24) during the pivotal movement. A belt engaging pulley (2 6) is mounted for rotation on the tensioner arm (16). A spring (30) coupled wit h the tensioner arm (16) biases the arm in a direction tending to force the pulley (26) into tensioning engagement with the belt when the tensioner is installed on the motor vehicle engine (13). The spring (30) biasing the arm (16) into a working position maintains a predetermined range of tension in t he belt during dynamic operating equilibrium of the belt. An anti-kickback mechanism (40) is coupled with the arm and stops instantaneous kickback movement of the arm (16) against the belt tensioning direction beyond when t he arm (16) is instantaneously moved away from the working position against the belt-tensioning direction in response to instantaneous tightening of the bel t. The anti-kickback mechanism (40) adjusts a location of the stop position bas ed upon the working position of the arm (16).
