A rotary compressor is provided to minimize a load generated during performing an initial operation of a compressor and to change a capacity without turning on/off power. A rotary compressor includes a casing, an electric power unit to generate rotational power, a compression unit coupled to a rotational axis(111), and a moving unit(130) to couple a cylinder contained in the compression unit to a roller(122). The casing forms an external appearance. The electric power unit is installed on an inside top portion of the casing. The compression unit is installed on an inside bottom portion of the casing. The casing has a discharging pipe on an upper surface of the casing to penetrate a wall side of the casing. A plurality of rotation prevention units are formed on the rotational axis and an eccentric member(124) in order to prevent mutual rotation. The roller is selectively separated from the inner surface of the cylinder. The moving unit installed in the rotational axis includes an advance and retreat member(131) in a direction of the rotational axis, a bar(132) vertically extended at one side of the advance and retreat member, and a drive apparatus to move in a direction of advance and retreat .
