A device for managing contents by using meta data in a portable terminal and a method therefor are provided to set and manage meta data of contents by using an image-based meta symbol in the portable terminal and to construct the structure of contents relation based on a user by using meta data based on image, thus user-led active contents classification and searching processes are available. While contents are displayed, selection of a meta data setup menu is confirmed(301-307). A list of image-based meta symbols is displayed. At least one meta symbol selected from the list is mapped with the contents. When the list of the meta symbols is displayed, meta symbols previously mapped with the contents are confirmed. Among all of the supportable meta symbols, the meta symbols are displayed by inactivating or excluding the confirmed meta symbols.
