An air conditioner and a method of controlling the operation thereof are provided to reduce manufacturing cost by not needing to add a separate mixing device. A method of controlling an electronic opening/closing valve includes the steps of starting a heating operation(S710), determining whether the operation of the air conditioner is a cooling operation or the heating operation by a controlling unit if the air conditioner is operated(S720), determining whether the stop time of a compressor is over a predetermined time by the controlling unit in case of the heating operation(S730), determining whether the temperature of external air is below a predetermined temperature by a temperature sensor in case that the stop time of the compressor is over the predetermined time(S740), turning on the electronic opening/closing valve by the controlling unit in case that the temperature of external air is below the predetermined temperature(S750), determining whether the on time of the electronic opening/closing valve is over a predetermined time by a timer(S760), and turning off the electronic opening/closing valve by the controlling unit in case that the on time of the electronic opening/closing valve is over the predetermined time or the temperature of a discharge pipe is over a predetermined temperature(S770).
