A character input device, a portable device equipped with the input device, and an input method are provided to effectively combine two buttons of the input device arranged in a circular shape, thus a user can more conveniently input characters. More than one character unit is allocated to a point button(210). Plural navigation buttons(220) are allocated with more than one character unit on the girth of the point button(210). When inputting predetermined characters by using the point button(210) and the navigation buttons(220), a user selects buttons where expanded characters are allocated after selecting buttons where basic characters are allocated.
