APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MAC PDU PACKING SUB-HEADER COMPRESSION IN BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS SYSTEM

An apparatus and a method for compressing a MAC PDU(Protocol Data Unit) packing sub header in a broadband wireless access system are provided to reduce overhead caused due to a PSH(Packing Sub Header) by removing the PSH on an SDU(Service Data Unit) when the SDU is not divided. An apparatus for MAC PDU packing sub header compression in a broadband wireless access system includes a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter transmits the MAC PDU omitting a PSH of an SDU which is not divided. The receiver inspects a specific protocol field included in the SDU in the MAC PDU, obtains information required for restoring the SDU, and restores the SDU. If the SDU not to be divided exists, the PSH before the SDU is omitted and if the SDU to be divided exists, the PSH before the SDU is not omitted.
