The system has a capacitive sensor e.g. floating bridge capacitive sensor, movable with respect to a patient (2) lying on an examining table (3). The sensor has segmented electrodes (5-8) that are arranged on an external surface of the sensor that faces the patient. The sensor is connected to an electronic card via a flexible connecting cable, where the sensor forms a large unique electrode presenting a maximal range. A control unit controls an electronic interrupter to modify the spatial resolution of the sensor by selecting a single electrode or a group of electrodes. An independent claim is also included for a capacitive measurement method permitting to detect the proximity of an object.
