A water soluble acrylic modified urethane-alkyd resin composition and a method for preparation thereof are provided to show excellent storage stability upon application to a paint, and excellent physical properties such as waterproofing, hardness and adhesive property upon painting onto wood or metallic materials. The water soluble acrylic modified urethane-alkyd resin composition has a viscosity of 1,000-3,000 cps and a average molecular weight of 30,000-60,000, and is prepared by the method comprising the steps of: reacting a hydroxy alkyd resin produced from an unsaturated fatty acid, a polyvalent aromatic acid and a polyvalent alcohol with an isocyanate compound to prepare an urethane modified alkyd resin; polymerizing an unsaturated fatty acid, a styrenic or acrylic monomer and an acrylic carboxylic acid monomer to prepare an acrylic polymer; and performing esterification of the urethane modified alkyd resin and the acrylic polymer which are produced from the first and second steps, respectively.
