PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge detection method and an edge detection apparatus capable of removing the effects of spike-like random noise contained in output of a line sensor and highly accurately detecting edge positions. SOLUTION: After output of the line sensor is normalized, the normalized output is filtered through the use of a spatial filter to remove random noise. An approximate expression acquired by approximating an amount-of-light distribution pattern by Fresnel diffraction is filtered through the use of the spatial filter to determine a filtered approximate expression. The filtered approximate expression is used to interpolate the amount of light between pixels in the filtered normalized output and detect a position at which the amount of light takes on a prescribed threshold value such as [0.25] as an edge position of a body to be detected.
