An abdominal exercise bar accessory includes a longitudinal rigid bar that the user presses against his chest and cradles within the user's underarm region, preferably with cushioned pads circumferentially attached to the bar, and two handles spaced apart extending out from the bar such that the user's forearms cross, generally parallel to each other and the bar, and grasp the hand-grip portions of the handles. In the preferred embodiment, the bar is concave shaped to match the contours of the user's chest for great comfort of use, is attached to an overhead resistance station, typically a cable-and-pulley weight station, and includes rigid side extensions perpendicularly attached to the ends of the bar, and flexible cables or straps that angle from the side extensions and connect to a fastener that may be attached and detached to the overhead resistance means. The user rotates and moves the bar downward from an upright sitting position towards the user's thighs, causing it to travel in a non-circular, non-uniform pathway that matches that of the user's natural body movements, providing greater comfort and better isolation of the abdominal muscles. It also permits the user to perform a twisting crunch, in which the user twists his torso to the side while rotating downward, exercising a greater area of his abdominal muscles.
