PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a write-once type recording medium provided with a defect management function and having compatibility with a rewritable recording medium, and a recording device for recording data on the same, a reproducing device, and its method. SOLUTION: A temporary defect management area 14 is provided between a control information recording area 12 and a data area 11 of the write-once type recording medium 10. In a stage before finalizing the recording medium 10, defect management information is temporarily recorded in the temporary defect management area 14. When finalization is carried out, the defect management information is recorded in a determinative defect management area 13 provided in the control information recording area.
