PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat-assisted magnetic recording head and a manufacturing method thereof. SOLUTION: The heat-assisted magnetic recording head mounted on a slider having an air bearing surface facing a recording medium and for locally irradiating the recording medium with light, thereby improving the recording density, comprises a substrate attached to one surface of the slider; a recording unit for performing magnetic recording with respect to the recording medium, wherein the recording unit is provided on the substrate and a tip of the recording unit has a step facing the air bearing surface which allows magnetic flux to be focused to the tip; a waveguide provided in a space formed with the step of the recording unit; and a near-field light generating pole for using light transmitted through the waveguide to generate near-field light to be emitted toward the recording medium, a tip of the pole being provided on the same plane as the air bearing surface and adjacent to the recording unit.
