PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an advanced retrieval system for optimizing retrieval results. SOLUTION: The method 10 of performing two-stage retrieval of an electronic content stored in a computer system or network is performed by recognizing a pattern in a search word input (Step 12) by a user (Step 14) in a first stage. A specific sub-collection is selected for retrieval (Step 20) based on the recognized pattern in the search word. The selected sub-collection is retrieved using the search word provided by the user (Step 22) in a second stage. By selecting the specific sub-collection for retrieval in the first stage, the two-stage retrieval method of the present invention provides an accurate and appropriate retrieval result.
