摘要 1,167,501. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 26 Oct., 1966 [27 Oct., 1965], No. 45517/65. Headings B6F and B6W. Machines with continuously rotating typewheel.-A type-wheel is mounted on a carrier for continuous and uniform rotation and the carrier is continuously and uniformly traversed along the printing line so that few parts are subjected to high accelerations and decelerations. Alternatively the paper set 10 may be traversed instead of the type-wheel. Type-wheel construction and disposition of characters.-The type-wheel may have a single row of type, two rows as shown, or such number as may fill all the lines of one page with one traverse of the type-wheel. The characters may be spaced equally around the periphery of the type-wheel as shown by the chain-dotted lines on Fig. 2, in which case the type-wheel indexing means has to be advanced for some characters and retarded in others. When the indexing signals are uniform the characters are displaced from their nominal positions by a progressively increasing amount either anti-clockwise or clockwise from the six o'clock position, Pig. 2. They are advanced in the case of characters later in the cycle and retarded in the case of characters in the early part of the cycle so that the resultant letter-spacing is equal. The surface of the characters is tangential to the surface in the nominal position. See Fig. 3, not shown. In the case of equally spaced characters the printing surfaces are angularly displaced about their vertical axis as in Fig. 5 (not shown). Printing in reverse direction.-Printing occurs in the normal left-to-right direction and may also print on the reverse traverse. The spacing and dispositioning of the characters is arranged accordingly. The type-wheels accommodate both sets of characters. Impression mechanism.-The type-wheel carriage also carries the electromagnetically operated hammer mechanism which travels therewith on rollers 31. The impact surfaces 29, 30 are larger than a character to ensure adequate impression. Forming characters by radiation.-In a modification the wheel 19 may be hollow and have in its peripheral wall character apertures in the shape of the characters. A controllable light or other radiation source passes through the apertures on to a light or radiation-sensitive paper. Paper webs.-The paper web assembly including carbon papers is fed over rollers 12 from storage reservoirs 14, 15. The rollers 12 and reservoirs may be moved to effect letter-spacing past the printing wheel.
