PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change a successive and high responsive compression ratio in a simple structure, and to realize high torque while suppressing occurrence of knocking. SOLUTION: This variable compression ratio engine 10 is provided with an auxiliary chamber 30 arranged to communicate with a main combustion chamber 14, and an electromagnetic cutoff valve 32 to connect the main combustion chamber 14 and the auxiliary chamber 30 to each other when opened and disconnect the main combustion chamber 14 and the auxiliary chamber 30 from each other when closed. The valve closing timing of the cutoff valve 32 is set to a predetermined timing during compression stroke according to a compression ratio required.
