A method for maintaining a connection in a telecommunications sys- tem and a telecommunications system comprising a wireless access network (20) providing a wireless access interface (21) for wireless terminals (10), and a first element (70) of the telecommunications system, wherein a wireless terminal (10) may set up a connection to the first element (70) through the wire- less access interface (21), wherein the system further comprises a second element (40) of the telecommunications system located between the wireless access interface (21) and the first element (70), wherein the second element (40) comprises means adapted to detect setting up of the connection between the wireless terminal (10) and the first element (70), and means adapted to send keep-alive messages to the first element (70) after detecting the setting up of the connection between the wireless terminal and the first element.
