An optical distance measuring device (8) measures the distance between it and a surface in the region in which the bonded fiber material webs (4a,b) abut to a backing (2). By evaluating the measured distance, it is determined if an overlap or gap is present. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for checking the abutment region of fiber material webs.
