1,149,671. Making metal strip, working at specified temperatures. ARMCO STEEL CORP. 31 March, 1967 [8 April, 1966], No. 14883/67. Headings B3A and B3V. A method of making coated ferrous strip includes heating the strip to 400-650‹ F., working the heated strip by flexing it sufficiently to strain its outer fibres, immediately quenching the strip and thereafter continuously levelling the strip to produce table-flat strip free from flutes and stretcher strain. The strip may be hot coated, e.g. galvanized, and in certain cases the temperature due to the residual heat from the coating operation will be sufficient for flexing, which is performed between rolls 12. Levelling of the strip is accomplished by passing it between tension bridles 16, 18, the precise elongation being determined by stretch rolls 20. When making galvanized strip, smooth ground temper rolls 26 may be used just ahead of the stretch rolls 20. The reduction effected by the temper rolls is 0À2 to 3% and preferably of the order of 2%. The strip is examined for flatness as it passes over an inspection table 22. |
