The invention concerns a timing device which in a particular mode consists of one or more emitting beacons (1). Said emitting beacon (1) is divided into 2 emitting half-beacons (1a and 1b). Said emitting half-beacons (1a, 1b) face each other, on either side of a virtual finishing line (7) and emit as directionally as possible towards each other regularly the re-updated time (5a and 5b). Each of said portable chips (3) is capable of sensing and recording the emitted times (5a and 5b) and the corresponding identifiers (10a and 10b) of each of the emitting half-beacons (1a and 1b) when it enters the emission fields (8a and 8b) of said emitting half-beacons (1a and 1b). The invention is useful for timing of mass or individual races or raids.
