1,200,392. Preparation of phenyl esters and phenols from benzene. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 10 Sept., 1968 [12 Sept., 1967], No. 42986/68. Addition to 1,185,373. Heading C2C. A process for the catalytic preparation of phenyl esters from benzene comprises reacting a mixture of benzene, a saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid and molecular oxygen in the presence of a noble metal of group VIII of the Periodic Table, the stable valency of the metal in its compounds being at most 4, and at least one neutral or basic carboxylate of a metal of Group II B , III or IV of the Periodic Table, the atomic number of the latter metal being at most 72. Preferably the carboxylates are of those carboxylic acids which are reacted with benzene and oxygen or those which serve as the reaction medium for operating in the liquid phase. The carboxylates may be used in an amount of from 10-100% calculated on the weight of the noble metal used. The carboxylates of Zn, Cd and of rare-earth metals are particularly preferred. |
