The method involves applying light on a surface of a wall covering e.g. laminate (5), under a point of angle, and receiving and evaluating the light portion reflected by the surface. The surface is illuminated perpendicularly from above the surface, and the surface is viewed from the direction of the incidence of the inclined light. A measured value is examined and evaluated in a common spatial coordination field from the angled illumination and the perpendicular illumination. An independent claim is also included for a device for checking the application of the surface finish on a surface of a wall covering e.g. laminate.
