In apparatus for controlling and/or adjusting component play in a spinning preparatory machine with a high speed covered roller facing (non-)covered component(s), with modifiable play and electrical insulation between the facing elements and the elements connected (as contacts) with an electric supply line containing a contact verifying measuring device, electric signals are emitted on contact with the roller cover (4a) and the measuring device has a device for determining the quantity of contacts. An independent claim is included for a corresponding play controlling method, in which electrical contact is created whenever the covered roller contacts the opposing component and the number of such electrical contacts is quantitatively determined.
