The method involves coupling light to a vital muscle region. The light propagated through the muscle region is detected and the spectral intensity distribution of the detected light is analyzed. The concentration of substances active as redox catalysts is detected from this analysis during a test, and the evaluation result is determined on the basis of the detected concentration. The concentration of a Cytochrome substance e.g. cytochrome-C-Oxidase is detected in the muscle area by the analysis. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an evaluation system for generating an evaluation result indicating the physiological state of a person e.g. state of endurance (2) mobile measuring device has a spectrometer for recording concentration of a Cytochrome substance.
